Using a computer in today’s world of smartphones may be not a big deal for many of us but its indeed a big milestone for our angels in Swanthana.
We have less than 50% of the kids who are responsive to learning but they ave never had any form of formal or special education most of their lives due to unfortunate circumstances.
Its only due to the generous heart and “don’t give up ” attitude of the volunteers in the past 5-6 years that the children were given the basic education of identifying alphabets, phonetics, numbers, colors, shapes, speaking skills etc. The teachers had to spend hours every day using different teaching aids to make sure the kids have understood and learnt according to their individual needs despite the physical and mental challenges (cerebral palsy, down’s syndrome, epilepsy etc)
We wanted to take the kids to next level where they can operate a computer on their own so that it opens a totally new world of learning , boosts their confidence and also gives them arena for vocational training as well.
We had to work on the English language reading skills extensively as that is very important for them to be comfortable with Word software. After months of effort we are now slowly seeing the results where the children were read and type words, letters and even stories which they had fondly learnt in their classes.
We would definitely want to explore speech to text and other software friendly to differently enabled which can be used by kids who may not be use their hands freely but can speak.
Every day is a challenge but our will keeps us going, knowing that one day or other every child will surely achieve her dreams.
